13 Feb The Brain Trust: Inside the IECA “One Great Idea” Sessions
In the world of college consulting, there is a secret weapon that separates a standard advisor from a truly plugged-in mentor. It is not a software program or a massive data set. Instead, it is the power of a professional community that genuinely likes and supports one another.
Every year, the Independent Educational Consultants Association hosts its Member-to-Member Winter Forum. It is a vibrant, fast-paced brain trust where top consultants from across the country gather to share what is working, what is changing, and how we can all serve our students better.
I was recently honored to be invited to facilitate the One Great Idea sessions for this year’s forum. Having served as a former IECA Board Member and Committee Chair, the invitation felt like a homecoming. These sessions are, quite simply, the heartbeat of our professional community.
The Magic of Open Source Consulting
The One Great Idea sessions are exactly what they sound like. Before the forum begins, members from across the globe submit their single best tip or innovation from the past year. These ideas are compiled into a booklet that becomes a practical playbook for success. Then we gather to dive deep into the strongest ideas and explore how to implement them.
What makes this so special is the open-hearted exchange. In many industries, people guard their secrets like a family recipe. Within IECA, we share them freely. Why? Because when we are better at our jobs, our students benefit.
From AI to Graduation Gifts: A Buffet of Innovation
The topics we explore are as diverse as the students we serve. Think of it as a mental Costco run for college insights. This year, the ideas span the full spectrum of our work:
The AI Revolution
We are not just talking about ChatGPT. We are sharing practical ways to use AI for research, organization, and efficiency while ensuring the student’s voice remains entirely authentic.
The Tech Stack
We examine the best communication tools to reach Gen Z where they actually live, which is rarely their email inbox.
The Human Touch
We discuss everything from meaningful graduation gifts to strategies for supporting pre-college jitters with empathy and intention.
Productivity Strategies
We share new ways to manage the fall crunch so students remain calm and families stay steady.
Why This Matters for Your Family
I have always believed that a consultant who stops learning stops being effective. By facilitating these sessions, I am not just leading a conversation. I am sitting at a table with some of the brightest minds in our field and absorbing the collective wisdom of hundreds of practices.
When I introduce a new texting strategy to a student or share a demonstrated interest strategy learned from a colleague in California or London, it has been vetted through this professional brain trust.
The Bottom Line
When you hire an independent consultant, you are not just hiring one person. You are gaining the collective insight and shared expertise of an entire professional organization.
I am looking forward to facilitating these sessions and bringing that fresh energy back to my work at Academic Access. It is about more than college lists. It is about a community of experts coming together to ensure every student finds the place where they will truly thrive.
Let the exchange of great ideas begin.
